How we operate

We aim to provide a neutral space for discussion, analysis and research focused on the key issues in international energy security.

We are based around a multi-disciplinary collaboration between the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the auspices of the Cambridge-MIT Institute. Via extensive links with partner institutions, we intend to address some of the most important energy security challenges currently facing the world. We work closely with industry, business and government, but remain independent. We start from the basis that the key questions and answers cannot emerge from any stakeholder, government or academic alone, consequently systematic dialogue underpins all that we do.

Systematic dialogue is a process by which stakeholders – with a focus on industry - are able to approach consensus on the issues that are having the greatest impact on their or the UK’s economic performance, approach consensus on a vision for the future, and develop and implement in collaboration with academia, an integrated programme of activity involving academics, industry and other relevant organisations supporting the realization of a shared vision for the future.

The overall aim of the systematic dialogue process is to enhance knowledge exchange between stakeholders and universities, leading to an alignment of academic activity in the UK, with the needs and opportunities of the UK economy and society.
